A Valentine’s Day Rant

28 02 2009

February 14

I wait for the movie montage
of our fondest moments
set to our favorite songs
to flash before his eyes
triggering a change of heart
followed by the grand gesture
that would prove
we were meant to be together forever
that the very stars would align just for us
all culminating in a happily-ever-after
that segues perfectly into end credits
leaving no room for error

But my life is certainly not a formulaic PG-13
romantic comedy
with a misguided, loveable male hero
with redeeming characteristics
And at this point, I would like
to just believe I could be happy
with that thought provoking
run-in six or so months later…
you know, the one where the female lead
has developed inner poise
and can walk away knowing
she really will be better off without him…
and the throwaway heartbreaker finally realizes
he has lost the best thing he ever had
and can do nothing to change it.
